Top 3 tips for choosing a micro wedding color palette

Hi guys,

Choosing a color palette for your micro wedding or elopement can be one of the most fun parts of pulling everything together for your wedding day! Typically once you decide on your color palette, you can really make all of your other decisions from there. You’ll want to have your color palette in mind when choosing your flowers, accessories, and any other decor. It can feel a bit overwhelming though! Likely you have a color in mind that you’d love to have throughout your wedding but may not know how to incorporate it or compliment it. That’s why I wrote this blog for you! Let’s dive into my top 3 tips.

1. Consider all aspects

To start, you are going to want to solidify a few key details of your wedding day. For example, what time of year will you be getting married? A spring color palette will look different than a fall color palette! Where will you be getting married? In the desert or are you heading off to a lake in the mountains? An elopement in a backyard will look different than a micro wedding at a brewery. Once you decide on time of year and location, it’ll be easier to start narrowing down colors!

2. Utilize Pinterest

Now that you’ve decided where and when you’re having your wedding, it’s time to start the fun part! Think of Pinterest as your honorary Maid of Honor for choosing your color palette. She’s helpful, inspiring, and there for you at any time of the day! Pinterest has long been one of the best places to go when wedding planning but it’s especially amazing for looking at example color palettes. You can type in any wedding keywords and find a ton of great visual examples. Try looking up things like “Fall wedding colors” or “Arizona elopement colors”. Don’t take this part too seriously! Just start pinning things that look pretty to you or catch your eye. After pinning a handful of pictures or color palettes, you’ll probably start seeing a theme come together.

P.S. If you prefer a physical method, grab a handful of wedding magazines and start cutting out photos with colors that you love! You can pin them to a large board or start a folder. It’ll help you get to the same end result.

3. Pull it all together

Once you have your Pinterest board started with all your color inspirations (or your physical board of magazine cut outs), open your board up and take a look. Is there a clear theme coming together for you? Are you seeing a lot of one color or a handful of colors that go together? This last step can be as easy and seeing the theme and deciding, “Yup! I want to go with rust colors.” If you have pinned a mix of colors or themes, you will want to start narrowing it down. Go back to step one and take into consideration the time of year you’re getting married and the location. Try to picture each of those colors in that vision and see how they fit. Then pick out a few key colors and see how they look together.

Also keep in mind that you want colors that compliment each other, and are not necessarily matchy-matchy. If you love the idea of a boho color palette, think of using deep rusts, light browns, creams, and vibrant oranges or yellows! You can use a mix of different complementary colors to build your palette.
